Business Travel: Green shoots in hotel bookings

One of the biggest casualties in the aftermath of the biggest recession in 7 decades has been the hotel business. When economic sentiment drops, it follows that people and companies shrink back from spending, as the emphasis is on cost cutting. But it seems as if business travel seems to be making a kind of comeback. There are reports that hospitality chains like Starwood and Marriott are expressing cautious optimism that business travel might show an increase over 2010, leading to a kind of revival of the business. This comes after over 2 years of sentiments of ‘gloom and doom’ that had prevailed in the industry, leading to widespread losses and a general tightening of belts.

The indication that business travel could be picking up, is an inference from quarterly profits that were higher than expected. This is because the hotel chains are heavily dependent on business travel to make profits, and per room revenues is certainly a function of how many business travelers are out traveling.  As of now, the room rates are much lower than the peak levels, given the fact that occupancy rates need to be shored up, but if the demand rises, it could mean that prices may be hiked too, leading to still higher profits. But that’s only if all goes well in the medium to long term!

Business Travel to pick up?

There are huge expectations from the economy in 2010. The last 2 years have been so disappointing and also disastrous that there are concerns and fears among people as to when the situation would pick up and things would get normalized again. The hotel industry has also seen very bad days and times in the past couple of years and in Canada the Hotel Association in Canada has forecast an increase in business travel to the extent of 3% next year. Leisure travel, though, is expected to fall by around 4%. But one of the biggest hits has been in air travel where people are driving to US airports are picking up flights from there as the fares are much cheaper there within the US and also to international destinations.

This seems to be like a new trend, but these smart moves by Canadian air travelers has airlines in this country hit really hard where it hits them the most. If you are in Toronto, you can easily get to Buffalo New York and then take a flight out which is not only convenient but you also save lots of money by doing this. In these days and times, people do take strange measures just to save a few dollars.
